AFLV Central
This past weekend I was at the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values (AFLV) Central conference in Indianapolis. This was my 14th year attending the conference and my 12th year presenting. A couple years ago the moved the conference to Indy which has been nice and close for me. It is the largest undergraduate conference for fraternity and sorority leaders bringing nearly 3000 people together.
This year I stepped out of my comfort zone and did my Abuelitas Hands program there. It is not a Greek program, but finally AFLV is drawing large enough crowds of Latino Greeks that I thought I could draw a good crowd. Luckily I was right, the room was packed and the energy was amazing. I always get nervous presenting that program, those that have seen it know I get a little misty at times, and get a little heated and passionate during the presentation. Respecting our past, having big dreams and working hard are things I was taught and I want to support and encourage others in the same regard.
I did two other workshops, one on Recruitment for culturally based fraternities and sororities and one on growing Multicultural Greek Councils. Both of those had standing room only, and I love getting returning students telling me about all the great things they accomplished since having me on campus, or hearing me at a conference. Glad I am making a difference.
They also asked me to sit on an “Ask the Experts” panel. While that program didn’t draw a crowd (it for some reason was not in the program booklet) it was a lot of fun mingling with a group of “experts” in the field. Now I am following up on contacts and working on late spring and fall bookings.
If you saw me at AFLV and want to inquire about dates and pricing please let me know so we can get something worked out. I am planning some trips to Florida, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and maybe Kentucky in the near future. I had some interest in returning to some Texas schools I visited in the past and always open to traveling! Let me know how I can help!
