Start With The Brother #SLBLI2015
This past weekend in Chicago was the Sigma Lambda Beta 2015 Leadership Institute. Interestingly I was the coordinator for two of these, 2005 and 2007, and served on the Board of Directors when it was changed from “Brotherhood Retreat” to our Leadership Institute. I am so proud to see the direction of the program and how each year we continue to push the envelop. Shout out to Executive Director Ricardo Cortez and my fellow Higher Ed Beta Nathan Bunch for the hard work.
Part of the curriculum was about understanding who you are, and how you fit into this bigger thing called Fraternity. I was asked to do my recruitment bit, lots of Betas saw me at AFLV this year, and have been requesting this program. I worked to find ways to connect to the curriculum focus for the weekend, while teaching some of the nuts and bolts of the recruitment theory that I teach.
I did my workshop four times, in duplicate, back to back…. which any speaker would tell you is brutal. I probably wouldn’t do that for anyone but my very own SLB. The sessions were awesome, I was nervous going in, I think I will always be nervous speaking to my Brothers because of the high expectations I have on myself, and the high love and expectation I have for my Brothers.
The feedback was great, so many Brothers coming up after the session asking for info on bringing me to campus, and as much as I liked that… what I liked the most if the chapters that I visited in the past two years coming to me and saying how much a program there made a difference… it is why I keep doing this!
